Federal Department of Energy Special Projects

The goals of the special projects activities are to directly involve States in activities to accelerate deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies; to facilitate the commercialization of emerging and underutilized technologies; and to increase the responsiveness of Federally-funded technology development efforts to the needs of the marketplace. The program will provide funds to support the deployment of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in several different categories each year.

The Department of Energy (DOE) awards Special Project funds on an annual basis to stakeholders of Clean City Organizations. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis, and can be used to cost-share up to 75% of the proposed project including incremental cost of the AFVs and the cost of installing fueling and recharging equipment. Eligible stakeholders of a Clean Cities Organization must apply for DOE Special Project funds through NYSERDA. Contact NYSERDA or your Clean Cities Organization for information on the current Special Projects solicitation.

Albany County International Airport Authority has received two Special Project grants for a total of $82,417. These grants were used toward the purchase of four dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) shuttle buses and three CNG pick-up trucks to operate at the airport. The vehicles will displace 244,000 gallons of petroleum and reduce emissions of one ton of NOx, 1/4 ton of PM, and ½ ton of CO2 over the lifetime of the vehicles. Photo of Albany Airport Shuttle Bus
