Project Title: Railmaster Intermodal System

Various Participating New York State Companies

Railmaster w

DESCRIPTION

NYSERDA, Railmaster Systems Inc. and a team of five New York rail equipment manufacturers cooperated in the design, manufacture and marketing of an innovative system for intermodal cargo transport that was originally designated the Railmaster system

The system was developed to provide an alternative to the conventional manner of highway trailer-to-rail cargo shipment, which involves loading truck trailer containers onto flatbed rail cars. In comparison to that mode of transport, the new system precludes the need for a separate flatbed rail unit and the associated weight and cost penalties. The Railmaster system was developed around two basic components: a modified truck trailer, and the special adapter that mounts onto a set of railroad wheels.

Subsequent to the developmental phase, successful system demonstration established the ability of the concept to provide, lower cost, more competitive freight transport, with related benefits in increased energy efficiency and reduced environmental emissions. The system has since been commercialized under the name RoadRailer T , proceeded through further design improvements, and has achieved worldwide market acceptance and utilization.

In 1991, the Railmaster system won a Robert Rodale National Environmental Achievement Award for Transportation Efficiency
