Project Title: Development of Compressor Control Valve
Alumina Micro, Inc., Lockport, NY
BACKGROUND
Vehicles equipped with hybrid electric powertrains have been proven to use significantly less fuel and to generate less pollution than conventional vehicles. Odyne Corporation is developing and building hybrid electric propulsion components and systems for trucks and buses. Components include: battery management systems, power electronics, traction drives, and advanced monitoring/control systems. These items are assembled into an integrated powertrain and sold to a variety of companies engaged in the manufacturing process and sale of medium-duty vehicles (e.g., shuttle buses, utility trucks, delivery trucks). Odyne has performed on-road tests and demonstrations with customers such as the Long Island Power Authority, City of Fresno (CA), Town of Hempstead (NY), and Town of North Hempstead (NY) and has established supply agreements with vehicle assemblers serving various market segments.
OBJECTIVE
The overall objective is to reduce the energy consumption and environmental impacts of buses and trucks, and to create economic development opportunities in New York State.
DESCRIPTION
NYSERDA has supported Odyne’s product development work, including actions such as developing powertrain specifications, analyzing integration of powertrains into chassis, designing engine-generator modules for producing electricity, designing battery packs, building prototype vehicles, and testing vehicle performance. In addition, support has been provided to improve Odyne’s production processes.
BENEFITS
This project helps create a more cost-effective way to introduce hybrid-electric technology into medium-duty vehicle markets, which could save significant amounts of fuel, reduce air pollution, and create jobs in New York State.
SCHEDULE AND STATUS
In phase I, the contractor developed the design of AECV in consultation
with Delphi Thermal Systems. Building production intent prototype samples
and testing will be carried out in phase II.
