New York Energy $martSM Offices Project
Step Six: Sustain Momentum
While an energy efficiency program begins with buy-in, continuing success depends on employees and other key audiences, including constituents. In that context, there must be ongoing reminders of the benefits of the program and recognition given to those who make the Program work.
Internal Audiences
Recognizing and rewarding change is vital to effecting lasting changes in habit. One New York County plans to hold monthly contests to encourage user compliance across departments. The department with the highest levels of equipment enabling and power management will receive free coffee and donuts at the end of the month. Celebrating success in this way is a small price to pay for monthly savings that total $5,000.
External Audiences
There are benefits to letting your constituents know that you are doing your part to promote energy-efficiency and cost savings. You can make use of a variety of outreach mechanisms, including issuing press releases to local media outlets or reporting on savings and environmental benefits in newsletters or radio programs. Consider preparing displays on your success with energy efficiency—including computers to exhibit power management procedures—for use at open houses and other events. Demonstrate power management techniques at school science and computer fairs. You may even find you are setting an example for local businesses or municipal governments to adopt their own power management programs. |
