NYSERDA and Clarkson University's Center for Advanced Materials Processing
invested more than $300,000 in a $536,000 project with Ferro Electronic
Materials, Penn Yan (Yates County), to develop and commercialize aluminum-oxide-based
slurries for chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP).
CMP is a necessary processing step that prepares surfaces on computer
chips and other components in the semiconductor/microelectronic manufacturing
industry.
Ferro has recently announced a $100 million CMP business plan that will
be implemented in New York State. The five-year program plans to invest
$52 million into infrastructure, including 170,000 SQ ft. in new facilities.
In addition, it will create 260 new jobs to support the business, with
most of these being employed in New York State. Professional jobs will
account for 150 of the total positions available, with 60 positions working
in the area of research and development to create next-generation products.
