New York dairies, though scattered across
rural and often remote areas, consume 400-500 MWh of electricity per year
and face similar manure disposal problems. Also, typical morning and afternoon
milking schedules often fall in peak utility demand periods. Cooperstown
Holstein Dairy Farm of Cooperstown (Tioga County) has a manure digester
that was constructed through a previous NYSERDA project and continues
to produce bio-gas that is used to produce heat.
Through this new project, Cooperstown Holstein will demonstrate the efficiency
of using the digester's bio-gas output to fuel a combined heat and power
(CHP) plant that generates electricity and also captures the waste heat
for beneficial use.
This generator will be driven by a Hercules 6 cylinder 65 kW engine.
The recovered heat will be used for space and water heating.
NYSERDA has funded half the cost for the upgrade of this CHP system.
BENEFITS INCLUDE:
- Peak load reduction of up to 45 kW;
- Reduction in annual utility electricity purchase by 300,000 kWh per
year;
- Over $13,600 savings in annual energy cost;
- 40% of rejected heat will be utilized.
RESULTS TO DATE:
- This project is under way.
