What's New

The EMEP program is committed to improving scientific understanding of electricity-related environmental issues by presenting pertinent news and events from the New York Region to the stakeholders. See below for upcoming events, the latest edition of our newsletter, or new projects in your area:

  • EMEP Newsletter - Spring 2008 (1.17MB .pdf)

  • Carbon Capture and Sequestration in New York State

  • White paper on Climate Change in New York State (773kb .pdf) : In developing the EMEP Research Plan, NYSERDA worked with the New York Academy of Sciences to create a background paper on climate change in New York, The purpose of this paper was to provide a context to develop a climate change research strategy for New York State. This paper is not intended to be a comprehensive critical review of the literature on climate change--it is meant to highlight major studies and initiatives and to assist in the climate change research planning effort.

  • 2007 EMEP Research Plan (2.95MB .pdf)
In the fall of 2006, the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) initiated a comprehensive planning effort to provide direction for environmental research in New York State over the next five years, with a focus on pollution associated with energy generation and use. The research plan’s potential users include NYSERDA, other New York State/regional/national research funding organizations and agencies, the scientific community, public benefit organizations, and policy makers. Within the plan, NYSERDA and NYAS have identified and prioritized key research areas that are suitable to be addressed through NYSERDA’s Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation, and Protection (EMEP) program and other funding organizations. This plan builds upon the previous EMEP research plan, which was derived through a similar stakeholder process in 2001.

  • CO2 Sequestration Overview available  (588kb .pdf): NYSERDA staff, with help from the NYS Museum geological staff, has written a brief overview of carbon sequestration opportunities in New York State. The paper focuses on geological sequestration and includes initial work by the NYS Museum, who is under contract with NYSERDA to study sequestration potential in NYS in detail.

  • EMEP Program Review and Evaluation: The EMEP Program underwent an external evaluation to determine the program's effectiveness in sponsoring and managing research, disseminating results, and affecting environmental policy. As part of this review, EMEP staff put together an overview of the program and major findings from more than 40 different research projects funded by EMEP. See Figures 2-4 for a summary of the key findings of the EMEP Program. More detailed information on the projects is presented in Appendix E. The results of the Program Impact Evaluation are reported in the “Value-Cost Assessment of New York Energy Smart Research and Development Program,” which will be available soon.

  • Synthesis of Findings from EMEP (106kb .pdf): The EMEP Program has sponsored a wide range of energy-related environmental research consistent with the EMEP Research Plan. EMEP staff have summarized key findings from these projects pertaining to the three EMEP focus areas: Air quality and related health research associated with particulate matter, ozone, and co-pollutants; Ecosystem response to deposition of sulfur, nitrogen, and mercury; and Crosscutting environmental science, energy, technology, and policy projects.

  • New Reports Released
    • Hubbard Brook Research Foundation report, "Mercury Matters". This report, based on two new studies published in BioScience, identifies known and suspected biological mercury hotspots in northeastern North America, and for the first time links them directly to causes. The authors document new ways that airborne mercury emissions can cause biological hotspots -- namely in watersheds sensitized by decades of acid rain and reservoirs manipulated for power production. This project was supported by NYSERDA's EMEP program. More information available from the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation at: http://www.hubbardbrookfoundation.org/MercuryStudy/

    • "Acid Rain and the Adirondacks: A Research Summary," published by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation, summarizes Adirondack long-term monitoring research findings. A limited number of printed copies are available from NYSERDA. The report is also available on CD. To request a hard copy or CD, send an e-mail to emep@nyserda.org with the words “Acid Rain Report” in the subject line, and specify hard copy or CD. Please include your mailing address.

  • "Call of the Loon" documentary: This 57-minute documentary follows the story of mercury as it travels from smoke stacks to loons on remote Adirondack lakes, and examines the response of government in protecting the well being of public health and the environment. Call of the Loon was produced by Mountain Lake PBS, located in Plattsburgh, NY, with support from NYSERDA's EMEP program.

The documentary is available for purchase from Mountain Lake PBS at: http://www.mountainlake.org/loon/index.ASP.
A short video clip of the documentary may also be viewed at: http://www.mountainlake.org/loon/video.ASP
