Summary:

Project Update (1,264kb .pdf)

map of projectWhile New York State streams and soils have been affected by acidification, in acid-sensitive regions such as the Adirondack Mountains, neither the proportion of affected streams nor the spatial extent of soil acidification has been determined. Insufficient data exist for determining whether stream acidity has decreased in response to the measured declines in the atmospheric deposition of acids. Furthermore, the baseline data needed to evaluate future trends in stream and soil acidity is inadequate.

This project addresses the gaps in available data through a stream survey in the Black River and Oswegatchie River watersheds of the western Adirondack region. Its primary objective is an improved characterization of the acidification status of streams and soils in an area representative of the region likely to be most affected by acid deposition in New York and possibly in the United States.
