Project Update (457kb .pdf)

map of projectThere are significant concerns about the adverse health effects of fine particles (PM2.5) in ambient air. One proposed hypothesis is that the number of ultrafine particles (UFPs), which contribute very little to total PM2.5 mass concentrations in ambient air, may be responsible for these effects. Epidemiological studies have shown significant associations between UFP number concentrations and mortality related to cardiovascular disease. Limited short-term measurements of UFP number concentrations are currently underway in a number of cities in the U.S.

This project has established a year-round, real-time UFP monitoring site in Rochester, NY. Its objectives include:

  • Monitoring UFP number and size distributions with a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer:
  • Acquiring filter-based and real-time PM10 and PM2.5 data, as well as data for ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide (NYS Department of Environmental Conservation); and
  • Assessing the potential health implications of modeled UFP deposition.
