Summary:

Project Update (335kb .pdf)

map of projectThis project offers the first comprehensive synthesis of available data from past studies, which were more local in scope, in order to clarify the effects of acid deposition across broader geographical regions in New York State. Its in-depth assessment gauges the extent to which recovery from acidification is occurring in the Catskills and Adirondacks, two regions that are especially sensitive to acidification. Specifically, the study considers

  • Key indicators of acidification in precipitation at six National Acid Deposition Program (NADP) sites;
  • Surface-water chemistry parameters at five Catskill streams and 12 Adirondack lakes;
  • Processes involved in nitrogen cycling; and
  • Effects of three potential acid deposition scenarios on water chemistry in the region, using the PnET-BGC model.
