This project seeks to identify the source types that contribute to ambient concentrations of fine particles (PM2.5) in the New York City (NYC) airshed and to quantify the influence of transported aerosols. The study is based on PM2.5 data gathered in 2001 in Manhattan and at a location in Sterling Forest, NY, which provides a "regional" point of comparison unaffected by NYC sources. Early analyses indicate that the mean NYC PM2.5 levels through August 2001 were above the federal annual standard and that the majority of this pollution was transported into the City from out of state.
