Summary:

Project Update (401kb .pdf)

map of projectAtmospheric deposition of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) has resulted in the acidification of surface waters in the Adirondack region of New York. The Huntington Forest is the only site in the Adirondacks that has the history, instrumentation, and background for making comprehensive analyses that include atmospheric, chemical, hydrological and biotic components. This project continues to monitor wet and dry deposition and solute fluxes in drainage waters in the Arbutus Watershed at Huntington Forest. The causes for the substantial differences in soil and surface water chemistry in subcatchments of the Arbutus Watershed, especially with respect to nitrate and calcium, is also being investigated. Findings to date indicate that there are important landscape controls at the small watershed scale that influence soil and surface water chemistry.
