Summary: Project Update (552kb .pdf)

map of projectLocated downwind of midwestern coal burning power plants, the Adirondack mountain ecosystem of New York State is one of the regions most sensitive to acidification in North America. The primary goal of this research was to increase understanding of the impacts and complex processes involved in acidic deposition in the region.

Under this extensive monitoring program water chemistry data are gathered from 52 lakes and six streams, in the Adirondack Mountain region, and analyzed to determine long-term trends. In addition, the study considers episodic acidification and impacts of watershed attributes.

Partners: NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, US Environmental Protection Agency, Syracuse University, US Geological Survey
