Designing the school building envelope, or "shell," involves many considerations. Both indoor and outdoor materials must be durable, inexpensive, easy to clean, and resistant to water damage and vandalism. They must meet codes yet appear inviting. Add energy- and resource-efficiency to this list and the design team's job is even more complex.
This course looks at the specific methods of creating energy-efficient building shells. Topics include wall and roof insulation, cool roofs, radiant barriers, air infiltration, and concrete masonry. The course is worth one hour of continuing education credit in the area of Health, Safety, Welfare.
