State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), NYSERDA is eligible to receive $18.7 million to provide cash rebates to New York residents who purchase high-efficiency appliances. On October 15, 2009, NYSERDA submitted its plan for an energy efficient appliance rebate program, the Great Appliance Swap Out, to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Under the proposed plan, the Great Appliance Swap Out program is expected to:

  • Provide New York consumers who own their own appliances with rebates for purchasing certain energy-efficient refrigerators, clothes washers, freezers and dishwashers
  • Offering a larger rebate to consumers who recycle their discarded appliances

Eligible Appliances

Under the proposed plan, consumers could receive rebates for purchasing eligible appliances individually or in a bundle. Appliances will qualify only if they have earned the ENERGY STAR® label, meaning that they are up to 30 percent more efficient than standard models on the market. Consumers may receive a larger rebate by purchasing three eligible appliances that meet standards issued by the Consortium of Energy Efficiency (CEE) that are higher than ENERGY STAR standards.

Under the proposed plan, customers purchasing appliances would qualify for a rebate of $75 ($105 with documented recycling) for ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, $75 ($100 with documented recycling) for clothes washers and $50 ($75 with documented recycling) for freezers. Rebates are available for dishwashers when they are purchased as part of a three-appliance package (refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer), which may qualify for a $500 rebate ($550 with documented recycling).

Time Table

NYSERDA submitted a Comprehensive Application [PDF | 1.1 MB] for the State Energy Appliance Rebate Program to the DOE on October 15, 2009. The plan must be approved by the DOE, which is expected to take at least 30 days. Upon formal approval, NYSERDA plans to launch the program in mid-February, during President’s Week.

Applications

Pending DOE approval of the program plan, NYSERDA will NOT be accepting applications for the Great Appliance Swap Out until the February 2010 launch during President’s week. The program will provide detailed information on program eligibility and requirements shortly thereafter.
