NYSERDA Funding and Support

In the first six years since the program commenced in 2000, NYSERDA has provided over $50 million to support approximately 100 projects installing CHP equipment at end-user sites.  When fully built, these projects will produce 100 MW of electricity and operate at or above 60% fuel conversion efficiency.  A similar level of funding continues to be available at the present and for the future.

Historically, NYSERDA has supported a diverse portfolio of CHP Demonstration projects with the intention of gaining knowledge that can be shared with the marketplace so that follow-on replication of proven configurations can be installed faster, better, and cheaper.  NYSERDA has selected this diverse portfolio through competitive solicitations so as to enable detection of marketplace trends that might otherwise be overlooked in niche settings.  Knowledge gained from this approach has confirmed that certain mature technologies, such as natural gas-fueled engines, combustion gas turbines, and steam turbines, are now ready for mass-market deployment.  Therefore, NYSERDA’s CHP programs have evolved to also include CHP Deployment funding through open-enrollment first-come/first-served solicitations.  The CHP Demonstration program will continue to evaluate emerging technologies such as microturbines, Stirling engines, organic Rankine cycle systems, Micro-CHP, etc., push the state-of-the-art key features such as synchronous-parallel interconnection for both mature and emerging CHP technologies to advance our understanding of CHP development business models.

Support is also available for sites interested in learning more about CHP.  Through a partnership with the USDOE-funded Northeast Regional CHP Applications Center (NAC), NYSERDA clientele can request a pre-screening study to determine whether they should hire a consultant to perform an investment-grade analysis of CHP applicability.  NYSERDA also provides funding support for those sites interested in conducting such a detailed analysis.

Private financing
Recent trends show that CHP developers are pursuing larger and larger sized projects, indicating a growing comfort among marketplace participants with this technology.

Furthermore, CHP developers, having gained valuable experience, are now starting to identify and pursue projects that are feasible without government subsidies, and investment firms are starting to provide financing for such projects.
