NYSERDA Awarded More Than $700,000 From U.S. D.O.E.
For Special Energy Projects
Albany, NY The New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) was awarded $702,000 from the U.S. Department
of Energy's (DOE's) highly competitive solicitation for State Energy
Program Special Projects.
"Thanks to our talented and dedicated staff here at NYSERDA,
New York was able to acquire hundreds of thousands of dollars for
a variety of projects," said NYSERDA Acting President Peter R.
Smith. "These DOE grants will promote awareness and improve New
York's energy efficiency, environment, and economy."
NYSERDA was awarded funding through the following seven proposals:
- $29,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) shuttle van for Albany International
Airport. An environmentally sound airport, Albany International
Airport already has a number of CNG vehicles in their fleet. This
award will make six out of eight CNG shuttle vans for the airport.
- $20,000 for Greater Long Island Clean Cities Coalition: The Clean
Cities Program is a U.S. Department of Energy initiative to encourage
communities to plan and implement strategies that accelerate the
introduction of alternative fuel vehicles.
- $20,000 for Clean Communities of Western NY: This voluntary initiative
recognizes and supports regional programs which pledge to introduce
alternative-fuel vehicles into public and private fleets.
- $100,000 to target New York State industries for energy efficiency.
This grant will be used to encourage energy efficiency improvements
for large commercial customers, such as manufacturers.
- $133,000 for distributed generation in federal facilities. A popular
means of reducing energy use, distributed generation uses measures
such as microturbines, fuel cells, or other power systems to create
electricity, thereby lowering energy costs.
- $300,000 for a Northeast Regional Combined Heat & Power Applications
Center: Through education and outreach programs as well as technical
assistance, Regional Application Centers will provide essential
and appropriate technology transfer support focused on the deployment
and commercialization of advanced Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
technologies.
- $100,000 for New York Energy $martSM Communities
(Rebuild America): Funds support specific and measurable building
and related energy-saving project partnerships that have defined
a program and process with significant opportunity to complete building
projects. The goal is for 50 percent of the partnerships to complete
at least one major building renovation project by 2005.
NYSERDA uses State Energy Program Special Project funds to improve
the energy efficiency of schools, businesses, homes, and other buildings;
promote energy-efficient industrial technologies; and support renewable
energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass. Some
of these projects will also create opportunity for distributed energy
resources and combined heat and power applications.
