NYSERDA Provides $82,841 to Lewiston
Nursing Facility
Our Lady of Peace S.N.F. to Save
97,500 kWh annually
Lewiston, NY -- The New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) provided $82,841 in financial incentives to Mount
St. Mary's Hospital for the construction of a new energy-efficient
250-bed skilled nursing facility. Funding for the state-of-the-art
158,000 square foot Our Lady of Peace S.N.F. was made available through
the New York Energy $martSM New Construction Program
and will save more than $9,750 in annual electric costs.
"By choosing to participate in NYSERDA's New Construction Program,
Mount St. Mary's Hospital was able to build a better, more energy-efficient
nursing facility that will cut its annual electric costs and provide
a more comfortable living environment for its residents for years
to come," said NYSERDA Acting President Peter R. Smith. "I
commend the hospital administration for taking advantage of one of
NYSERDA's most popular energy-saving programs."
"Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center was very pleased
to participate in this excellent program that not only provided for
a better building, but helped us use all of our resources more effectively,"
said Angelo G. Calbone, President and CEO of Mount St. Mary's Hospital.
Cannon Design of Grand Island worked with the hospital to identify
potential energy-saving opportunities in the design and construction
of the new facility. Pre-qualified incentives totaling $18,091 were
provided for high-efficiency electric motors and variable speed drives.
A single Custom Measure totaling $64,750 was offered for the installation
of a valance heating and cooling system.
Smith said the valance system was chosen over a traditional fan-coil
unit system based on the projected savings of more than 97,500 kWh
per year, and a summer and winter demand reduction of 26 kW. Valance
heating employs large covered heating/cooling coil suspended from
ceilings in individual rooms. The heating or cooling of a room occurs
by convection, eliminating the need for an electric-driven fan, thereby
producing cost savings. In addition, the gentle air exchange in the
rooms eliminates drafts, making patients more comfortable. The annual
electric savings associated with the project is estimated at $9,750
with a simple payback after the NYSERDA incentive of 2.85 years.
All New York Energy $martSM programs are funded
by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland,
and Rochester Gas and Electric. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation
established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under
an agreement with the Public Service Commission.
New York Energy $martSM programs are designed to
lower electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's
electric utilities move to competition. The programs are available
to electric distribution customers (residential, commercial, institutional,
and industrial) who pay into the System Benefits Charge (SBC).
Since 1998, NYSERDA has provided more than $26 million to support
more than 500 projects in Erie and Niagara Counties. Combined with
co-funding from NYSERDA's partners, the value of these projects is
more than $65 million. Among some of the other customers NYSERDA is
working with in Erie and Niagara Counties, are: State University of
New York at Buffalo; Veridian Engineering, Inc.; Quebecor, Kreher's
Poultry Farm; HSBC Bank USA; and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
