Franklin Academy To Use High-Efficiency Equipment
in New Addition
NYSERDA Provides More Than $57,000 For Improvements
Albany, NY The New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) will provide more than $57,000 to the Malone Central
School District for installing energy-efficient equipment into a new
106,000 square foot addition at the Franklin Academy Senior High School.
The new space will include classrooms, locker rooms, a media center,
and administrative offices.
"With many school districts operating under tight budgets,
capital improvements just make it that much more difficult for schools
to come out ahead," said NYSERDA Acting President Peter R. Smith.
"Using the cash incentives available through the New York Energy
Smart New Construction Program, the Malone Central School District
will be able to offset the cost of the new addition and assure that
it is equipped with premium, energy-efficient equipment."
"Thanks to the financial and technical assistance provided by
NYSERDA, the new addition for Franklin Academy will operate with lower
energy costs and in the long run, this will ultimately save money
for the District," said Superintendent Wayne C. Walbridge. "With
improved heating, cooling, and lighting capabilities, this expansion
will also provide students with a comfortable learning environment."
Expected to be completed in December 2004, the new addition will incorporate
a heat recovery system to heat the pool water. Using waste heat, the
pool heat recovery unit will be able to complement the heating of
the water and reduce electricity use. Variable speed drives will be
placed on pump and fan motors, helping them to run more efficiently,
and a new chiller will replace multiple air conditioning units. The
technical assistance for this project was provided by Einhorn Yaffee
Prescott Architecture & Engineering, P.C. of Albany, NY.
"The Malone Central School District has made a great addition
at Franklin Academy even better by intelligently investing in energy
efficient equipment that will save taxpayers for years to come,"
said Senator Betty Little. "Today's announcement is a great example
of the benefits NYSERDA can offer schools and businesses that may
be considering renovations and new construction projects."
"I applaud Malone Central School District for taking a cost-effective
approach to the construction project at Franklin Academy," said
Assemblyman Chris Ortloff. "With the help of NYSERDA, this new
addition will provide much needed space for the school and more importantly,
taxpayers will benefit from the energy efficiency for the life of
the building."
Funding for this project comes from the New York Energy $martSM
New Construction Program. All New York Energy $mart programs are funded
by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland,
and Rochester Gas and Electric. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation
established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under
an agreement with the Public Service Commission.
New York Energy $martSM programs are designed to
lower electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's
electric utilities move to competition. The programs are available
to electric distribution customers (residential, commercial, institutional,
and industrial) who pay into the SBC.
