NYSERDA Provides $561,989 to
Veridian Engineering, Inc.
To Implement Energy Saving Measures
Defense contractor expected to save an estimated $370,000 annually
Veridian, a leading provider of information-based systems, integrated
solutions and services specializing in mission-critical national security
programs for the intelligence community, the Department of Defense,
and U.S. government agencies involved in homeland defense, has entered
into a partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) and energy service company Ameresco, Inc. to implement
a series of energy saving and efficiency measures that will save the
defense contractor an estimated $370,000 annually.
"Our work with Veridian and Ameresco represents another successful
'win-win' partnership with New York State businesses. By taking advantage
of incentives offered by NYSERDA, Veridian was able to identify areas
in its physical plant and operations where energy efficiencies and
savings could be realized, and thereby lowering their overall cost
of operation," said NYSERDA President William M. Flynn.
"The expertise of Ameresco (formerly Duke Solutions) and the
financial assistance offered by NYSERDA has allowed Veridian to modernize
its facility and reduce its facility based electric consumption. This
will make Veridian more competitive in the marketplace," said
Thomas Pleban, Director of Buffalo Support Services for Veridian.
"Ameresco is grateful for the opportunity to have partnered
with Veridian, in the design and implementation of their Energy Reduction
and Renewal program. We were able to work closely together to provide
renewal to their physical plant and facility systems and significantly
lower their operating costs. The incentive received through NYSERDA's
Commercial and Industrial Performance Program (CIPP) has helped to
make the project grow significantly and maximize the renewal benefits
for Veridian," said David J. Anderson, Executive Vice President
Ameresco, Inc.
The total project cost is $2.1 million with NYSERDA providing $561,989
in financial incentives. Veridian utilized financial incentives available
through NYSERDA's Commercial and Industrial Performance Program (CIPP),
to reduce the cost of the energy efficiency upgrades. Under the CIPP,
financial incentives provided by NYSERDA go directly to energy service
companies, such as Ameresco, to help lower the overall project cost
and to help promote the development of the energy service company
sector of the state's economy.
"This partnership between Veridian and NYSERDA will make Veridian
more energy efficient," said Erie County Executive Joel A. Giambra.
"I am pleased with the continued effort that NYSERDA and Governor
Pataki have demonstrated in assisting our upstate businesses to become
more competitive."
"These incentives are another example of New York State's commitment
to keeping businesses competitive. As energy demands continue to increase,
these types of programs are invaluable to companies like Veridian,
which depend heavily on energy," said Assemblyman Majority Leader
Paul Tokasz.
"Programs like NYSERDA's Commercial and Industrial Performance
Program are an excellent example of how New York State assists its
businesses in becoming more efficient and, therefore, more competitive.
This can only mean a stable local workforce and long-term economic
viability for our employers," said State Senator William Stachowski.
Energy-efficient upgrades at Veridian involve four key measures:
The replacement of existing inefficient lighting systems (predominantly
T-12 fluorescent lighting) with T-8 technology; redesign and replacement
of chilled water system for two buildings; installation of a new direct
digital energy management system, and; modification and replacement
of a number of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems such
as variable speed drives for fan systems, new rooftop units, and a
heating boiler.
It is anticipated that Veridian will save more than 3.63 million
kilowatt hours of electric energy per year. Annual savings are estimated
at $370,000, representing an estimated 25 percent reduction in utility
costs associated with building systems. The project will also help
protect the environment by reducing NOx emissions, PCB ballasts and
refrigerant
Funding for the Erie County Library project and others comes from
NYSERDA's New York Energy $martSM program, which
is designed to lower electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency
as the State's electric utilities move to competition. New York
Energy $martSM encompasses many energy efficiency programs
and is available to all electric distribution customers.
Since 1998, NYSERDA has provided more than $26 million to support
more than 500 projects in Erie and Niagara Counties. Combined with
co-funding from NYSERDA's partners, the value of these projects is
more than $65 million. Among some of the other customers NYSERDA is
working with in Erie and Niagara Counties, are: State University of
New York at Buffalo, eBidenergy.com Inc., Kreher's Poultry Farm, HSBC
Bank USA and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority
