NYSERDA helps Beech-Nut® Improve Efficiency and
Lower Energy Costs.
$290,000 expected in Yearly Energy Savings
Albany - Sept. 26. The New York State Energy Research & Development
Authority (NYSERDA) announced completion of a thorough energy analysis
at Beech-Nut® Nutrition Corporation in Canajoharie, NY. The study
yielded specific energy saving recommendations that could lower annual
energy usage at the plant by $290,000. Founded in New York State,
Beech-Nut® employs 360 workers at the plant.
The energy study was performed to determine the most economical means
to improve plant processes and energy efficiency. The analysis included
recommendations to; upgrade a boiler, install a new air compressor
system, install a heat recovery system for the refrigeration system
and implement certain process improvements. Additionally, the study
examined feasibility of installing a co-generation plant, which would
provide state-of-the-art energy independence at the plant. Beech-Nut®
is now eligible to receive nearly $110,000 in funding to implement
these recommendations through NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial Performance,
New York Energy SmartSM Loan Fund and Technical
Assistance Programs.
"Our Technical Assistance Program provides an excellent opportunity
for businesses to learn exactly where they can make substantial gains
towards reducing overall energy costs," said NYSERDA Pres. William
M. Flynn. "Assisting Beech-Nut® in implementing the study's
recommendations, is how we can help New York businesses lead the way
in adopting energy efficient practices while keeping quality jobs
in our communities."
"In today's competitive business environment companies must
continue to explore every opportunity for improvement and growth.
NYSERDA's programs have helped to identify, as well as support the
implementation and utilization of the most viable energy efficient
practices. NYSERDA's programs offer us long term opportunities for
business and job growth, " said Beech-Nut® Nutrition Corporation
Plant Manager, Jeffery Heiser.
Provided on a cost-shared basis, NYSERDA's Technical Assistance programs
provide businesses, institutions, local governments, and building
owners with detailed engineering studies. Typical studies include,
but are not limited to, technical and cost-benefit analyses, assessments
of industrial process improvements, design and planning assistance,
along with commissioning of equipment, systems, and buildings.
"I applaud the initiative of Beech-Nut® in seeking NYSERDA
expertise to improve their plant operations through increased energy
efficiency. I share the enthusiasm of all involved as I know this
study will assist Beech-Nut® in remaining a competitive New York-based
employer, " said New York State Member of Assembly Paul D. Tonko,
D-Amsterdam.
Since 1998, energy efficiency projects within Montgomery County
have received more than $2 million in funding from NYSERDA programs.
With co-funding, a total of $5.6 million has been invested. NYSERDA
administers the New York Energy $martSM program, which is designed
to support certain public benefit programs during the transition to
a more competitive electricity market. Some 1,100 projects in more
than 30 programs are funded by a charge on the electricity transmitted
and distributed by the State's investor-owned utilities. The New York
Energy $martSM program provides energy efficiency services, including
those directed at the low-income sector, research and development,
and environmental protection activities.
