HANNAFORD MARKETS COMMIT MORE THAN $1.7 MILLION
FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS
NYSERDA Provides More Than $770,000 in financial incentives
Improvements will provide added comfort for shoppers and staff
Albany, NY The New York State Energy Research and
Development Authority (NYSERDA), Hannaford Markets, and Creative Energy
Decisions have partnered in a $1,747,418 project to provide energy-efficiency
improvements at 26 Hannaford Supermarkets in northern, central and
eastern New York. NYSERDA has committed more than $770,000 to various
lighting and energy-efficiency projects at stores from Plattsburgh
to Kingston, and will present a check to Hannaford officials today
at the Hannaford on 96 Wolf Road.
The energy saving measures implemented through NYSERDA's New York
Energy $martSM Commercial/Industrial Performance Program
were installed in Hannaford stores in Albany, Amsterdam, Clifton Park,
Colonie, Delmar, East Greenbush, 2 stores in Glens Falls, Glenville,
Gloversville, Guilderland, Herkimer, 2 stores in Kingston, Highland,
Latham, Niskayuna, North Greenbush, Oneonta, Watertown, Plattsburgh,
Rotterdam, Saratoga, Troy, Utica, and Watertown.
"All across New York State, NYSERDA is helping residents, institutions,
businesses, industry, schools, and local governments with innovative
energy projects that save money. NYSERDA provides financial and technical
assistance through a variety of New York Energy $martSM
programs," said NYSERDA President William Flynn. "I am proud
that NYSERDA could partner with Hannaford Markets and Creative Energy
Decisions to implement these energy-efficiency measures. The end result
of this project will save Hannaford over $435,000 in annual energy
costs, and provide increased comfort to shoppers and staff."
"Energy efficiency is often overlooked when it comes to cutting
costs for business, but Hannaford recognized the value of reducing
their energy use," said Senator Neil D. Breslin. "This will
save hundreds of thousands for Hannaford and help the company remain
competitive. I hope more businesses take advantage of the financial
and technical assistance that NYSERDA offers for energy efficiency."
"As a member of the Economic Development Committee, I applaud
Hannaford for pursuing the opportunities offered by NYSERDA and improving
the energy efficiency of their stores to cut costs. The partnership
between NYSERDA and Hannaford is a perfect example of how Governor
Pataki and the State are helping businesses remain competitive in
New York," said Assemblyman Robert G. Prentiss.
"The supermarket industry is a highly competitive one and we
are always looking for ways to manage costs. Electricity represents
a significant operating cost in this business and NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial
Performance Program provided a great opportunity for us to remain
competitive, reduce operating costs, and demonstrate our commitment
to energy efficiency and conservation," said Hannaford District
Manager Dennis Martin.
Funding for this project comes from NYSERDA's New
York Energy $martSM program, which is designed to lower
electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's
electric utilities move to competition. New York Energy $martSM
encompasses many energy efficiency programs and is available to all
electric distribution customers (residential, commercial, institutional
and industrial) of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk,
Orange and Rockland, and Rochester Gas and Electric.
Since 1998, NYSERDA has provided more than $28 million
to support more than 400 projects in Albany County. Combined with
co-funding from NYSERDA's partners, the value of these projects is
more than $60 million. Among some of the other customer NYSERDA is
working with in Albany County are Verizon Communications, Inc., Albany
Marriott, the College of Saint Rose, and Equinox.
A component of New York Energy $martSM, the Commercial/Industrial
Performance Program, provides cost effective measures that include
lighting, motors, variable-speed drives, energy management systems,
packaged air conditioning and chillers, and custom measures that result
in demand reduction or energy efficiency improvements. Financial incentives
are paid on a performance basis to contractors implementing cost effective
electrical efficiency improvements, or demand reduction. For more
