NYSERDA and K. J. Electric Assist National Pipe & Plastics, Inc.,
Reduce Energy While Increasing Product Output by 138 Percent

Vestal, NY– The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is providing more than $22,000 to National Pipe & Plastics, Inc., through its New York Energy $mart Equipment Choices Program. Working in conjunction with K. J. Electric, a participating vendor in NYSERDA's New York Energy $martSM Premium-Efficiency Motors Program, National Pipe & Plastics, Inc. is replacing less efficient motors in its 200-plus motor inventory, with premium-efficiency motors.

"The partnership of NYSERDA, K. J. Electric, and National Pipe and Plastics is a prime example of the assistance we offer to help New York businesses maintain a competitive edge," said NYSERDA President William M. Flynn. "Governor Pataki and NYSERDA promote the idea of energy efficiency as a link to a better environment and economy."

"Through NYSERDA's Premium Efficiency Motors Program we are able to provide value-added services to National Pipe and Plastics. With NYSERDA's financial assistance in partnership with K. J. Electric's technical expertise, we are able to help our customers install more efficient equipment and cut costs," stated Paul Dougher, plant manager of K. J. Electric in Binghamton.

K. J. Electric is one of New York's largest motor dealers. As a participant in the New York Energy $mart Premium-Efficiency Motors Program, K. J. Electric has met the objectives of the Premium-Efficiency Motors Program, which are to increase the availability, promotion, and sale of qualified premium-efficiency motors throughout its sales territory. Not only does K. J. Electric offer a wide range of these motors, it also assists businesses, such as National Pipe & Plastics, in identifying premium-efficiency replacement motors to match existing footprints, size constraints, operating conditions, while also providing a comparison of overall costs.

K. J. Electric completed an inventory of National Pipe & Plastics existing motor base and then performed an engineering study to identify savings opportunities. Once the less efficient motors were identified, K. J. Electric metered the equipment to determine the existing energy usage. Upon replacing seven inefficient motors and speed-drives, K. J. Electric monitored the new, premium-efficiency motors, and determined that National Pipe & Plastics realized an annual energy savings of $20,000 and an increase of 138 percent in product input.

National Pipe & Plastics, Inc. is one of the largest PVC pipe producers in North America. Its Binghamton plant employs 185 and manufactures approximately 130 million pounds of PVC pipe annually. National Pipe & Plastics received the financial incentive to purchase these premium-efficiency motors from NYSERDA's New York Energy $mart Smart Equipment Choices Program. This program offers cash back for the installation of eligible electric-efficiency measures such as lighting, motors, HVAC, transformers, variable-speed drives, high-efficiency windows plate pre-coolers, and vending machine occupancy sensors. The New York Energy $martSM Equipment Choices Program is offered to eligible commercial, industrial, institutional, agricultural, governmental, and multi-family (5 units or more) customers.

New York Energy $martSM programs are designed to lower electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's electric utilities move to competition. The programs are available to all electric distribution customers (residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial) of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland, and Rochester Gas and Electric.

All New York Energy $mart programs are funded by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers of participating utilities. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under an arrangement with the Public Service Commission.
