Albany, NY The New York State Energy Research and
Development Authority (NYSERDA) awarded $25,000 to the Depew
Union Free School District to install advanced meters that
will be used to monitor electricity consumption. The school
district applied for funding to install web-enabled advanced
monitoring equipment under NYSERDA's Institutional Energy
Performance Contract Assistance Program. NYSERDA provided
full funding for the purchase of the meters, which will help
the school district determine where and when energy is being
used. This information is essential to reduce energy consumption
and identify peak demand periods.
"Energy bills are a major strain for New York's businesses
and municipalities," NYSERDA President William M. Flynn
said. "A common objective of NYSERDA and Governor Pataki
is to improve the economics of the State through energy
savings. We encourage other school districts like Depew
Union Free to take part in the programs NYSERDA has to offer."
The latest in energy management technology, web-enabled
advanced monitoring allows for energy profiling, billing,
and rate analysis. Customers are able to analyze the information
from the meters by logging into an assigned website on the
Internet.
By strategically placing a number of meters throughout a
facility, one can compare daily energy use. The information
is then used to assess the energy demand on a weekly and monthly
basis with the expectations that the data will then be used
to help decrease future energy consumption.
Funding for this project comes from NYSERDA's New York Energy $martSM program, which is designed to lower electricity costs by encouraging
energy efficiency as the State's electric utilities move to
competition. The programs are available to all electric distribution
customers (residential, commercial, institutional and industrial)
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange
and Rockland, and Rochester Gas and Electric.
All New York Energy $martSM
programs are funded by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid
by electric distribution customers of participating utilities.
NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation established by law in
1975, administers SBC funds and programs under an agreement
with the Public Service Commission.
