NYSERDA Offers $2 Million for Development and Use of High-Efficiency Curing Processes;
Ultraviolet, Electron-Beam Curing Cuts Emissions, Energy Consumption in Coating Processes

Niagara Falls Conference, Oct. 20-21 Promotes Technologies to Manufacturers

Albany, Oct. 20, 2009—The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority today announced $2 million in funding for development and installation of Ultraviolet Light (UV) and Electron Beam (EB) Process curing systems.  The solicitation provides incentives for New York-based industrial sites to adopt innovative UV and/or EB processes within their manufacturing processes, or for New York State technology developers to produce an innovative UV/EB product, process or service that will provide an energy benefit to end users.

“NYSERDA’s Program Opportunity Notice (PON) 1641 demonstrates its commitment to support the deployment of environmentally friendly technologies and will provide up to $2 million for research and demonstration projects within New York State,” said Francis J. Murray, Jr., NYSERDA President and CEO. “The increased adoption of ultraviolet light and electron-beam curing technologies complements the vision of Governor Paterson’s energy efficiency agenda and will enable New York State manufacturers to remain competitive and create clean energy jobs for the future.”

The RadTech UV/EB East Conference is being held at the Niagara Falls Conference Center, Oct. 20-21 and is aimed at introducing and promoting the technology to industries including metal, plastics, wood finishing, packaging and printing, and electronics applications.   Dubbed uv.eb EAST, the event is co-sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Electro-technologies such as ultraviolet light (UV) and electron beam (EB) curing processes can produce significant energy and productivity efficiencies. When used for curing of inks and coatings, it is an instantaneous process that offers substantial productivity enhancements, plus it reduces or eliminates the need for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to be used as diluents. Use of this electro technology also reduces natural gas-heat requirements by eliminating the need for thermal oxidizers used in VOC destruction. All of these benefits meet NYSERDA’s goal of supporting technologies and innovations which provide an economic, environmental and energy benefit to companies within New York State.

NYSERDA has provided incentives for a number of notable UV and EB projects through prior funding opportunities seeking proposals covering a wide array of technologies.  Program Opportunity Notice 1641 is NYSERDA’s first targeted UV/EB solicitation and more information is available at http://www.nyserda.org/Funding/default.asp
