"Biofuel" A Green Oil Heating Option Debuts in New York State; Low-sulfur Fuel Oil and Soybean Oil Blend Offers Double Clean Air Benefits
Albany Jan 28-- Two New York metropolitan area oil heat dealers are introducing "Biofuel," (B-20) a blend of 80 percent low-sulfur fuel oil and 20 percent biodiesel, that is refined from soybean oil. The heating market introduction is funded by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and is aimed at reducing air pollution and petroleum dependence among oil-heated homes in the metropolitan New York area.
Biofuel is a clean-burning, alternative fuel blend made from refined soybean oil and low-sulfur heating oil. The soybean oil component of biofuel is a natural product and environmentally friendly. The use of low-sulfur oil, the same grade as that used for diesel motor fuel clean air requirements, is also new to the oil heat market. Together, the blend can cut harmful sulfur and carbon dioxide emissions from the two million homes that burn oil for space and water heating.
The two dealers, ClickableOil.com, Inc., an online internet dealer based in Mount Vernon, and Fred M. Schildwachter and Sons, Inc., Bronx, have begun delivering B-20 biofuel blend to their regular oil heat customers who request it.
ClickableOil.com, Inc. serves Westchester County, New York City and the Long Island region. Interested customers can view their website at www.ClickableOil.com for further information.
Fred M. Schildwachter & Sons, Inc., a large oil heat wholesaler, terminal operator and full service retail marketer serves Westchester County, Manhattan and the Bronx. Their website at www.Schildwachteroil.com contains more information.
NYSERDA President Peter R. Smith said "Both companies are pioneers in this new market that benefits our air quality, our economy, our agricultural industry and the energy independence of the United States," He noted that NYSERDA has a program to develop New York biodiesel, from crop to tank.
Guy Pipolo, of ClickableOil.com, Inc., said "Biofuel is a step toward U.S. energy independence, while the environmental benefits are a great by-product of its use. Biofuel is a natural way to improve overall petroleum efficiency and performance."
David Schildwachter, of Schildwachter and Sons, Inc., said "Our company has been serving the transportation market for two years with biodiesel fuels. We have the proven experience and commitment to bring biofuel successfully into the heating market."
The soybean oil portion of a B-20 biofuel blend is biodegradable, nontoxic, odorless and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Biofuel can be used in any oil-fired heating system and doing so reduces dependence on foreign petroleum imports. The cost differential, compared to regular fuel, oil is minimal.
A 1998 study by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture concluded that biofuels can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 78 percent compared to regular petroleum fuels. This greatly reduces the build up of greenhouse gases that may contribute to global warming.
Scientific research also confirms that biofuel, especially when blended with low-sulfur fuel, can reduce other harmful emissions including sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. With its cleaner burning properties, biofuel can enable cleaner heat exchangers in boilers and warm air furnaces, thus reducing the cost of annual cleaning and tune-ups.
