2005
FOR RELEASE November 25, 2005 CONTACT Thomas Collins, NYSERDA , 518-862-1090 x3250 NYSERDA Named Recipient of National Green Building Leadership Award
The U.S. Green Building Council named the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recipient of the 2005 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDŽ) award. The LEEDŽ award is given each year to an organization that makes an exemplary effort to promote and help implement LEEDŽ green building practices.
NYSERDA President, Peter R. Smith said, "We are honored to receive the LEEDŽ award from the U.S. Green Building Council. NYSERDA encourages green building as a way to improve energy efficiency, environmental conditions, and improve health and safety in buildings. The benefits are lasting and considerable, increasing energy efficiency by 20-30%. Simply stated, green construction increases the building's value in the marketplace."
Since 1996, NYSERDA has been involved with the building of more than 22 million square feet throughout New York State. Federal and State funds, in excess of $3.9 million, have been granted by NYSERDA to assist in these building projects. Some examples of organizations participating in green building through NYSERDA are the New York Times, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Battery Park City, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and the State University of New York.
NYSERDA has become a national leader in green building, having helped design tax credit legislation for green building. These tax credits create an incentive for organizations to implement green building practices to increase their energy efficiency while still saving money.
"Green buildings are environmentally responsible, economically viable, and healthier places in which to work and live," Smith noted. Green buildings require a common sense approach to design, but have been proven to not have significant impact on first costs.
